Oh George (Saba, Cantoni Houston)...Our new furniture is absolutely gorgeous!!! It was delivered this morning and Ross and I are very, very happy with it all. And – you were completely right about the tobacco color of the sectional – I adore it!! Ross said his chair is very comfortable – and we love the rug, too! It’s all perfect.

I think we’re ready to look at a coffee table – and maybe a small table to put near Ross’s chair. And I think you mentioned a bench of some kind – that would probably work very well in the room. Ross will be in Houston a couple of times before Christmas, so he may pop in if he has some free time. We’ll look around here, but if you think of something that will work, please keep us in mind.

27 YEARS AND COUNTING
Trends change, people change, and over the course of 27 years, Cantoni has changed. However, along with founder Michael Wilkov remaining at the helm, there are several things we’ve chosen to keep the same—like our commitment to the growth and satisfaction of our employees, and the Triple C service we guarantee customers. (Cantoni. Customer. Commitment.) We figure, why tinker with the thinking we believe is the cornerstone to our longevity? 
November marks the month when we allow ourselves to consider surpassing more than a quarter century of success, so we hope you’ll humor us as we take a look at “the way we were.” Check out our 27th anniversary photo gallery for a glimpse at what we once thought was chic, and join us on a trip down memory lane via a few heartfelt stories submitted by employees who bravely jumped on our bandwagon and have since enjoyed the journey.

IN THE BEGINNING...GREAT DESIGN!
There has always been Michael’s vision and passion for great design, but back in the 80s, a handful of others were instrumental in helping to launch the Cantoni concept. A staff of two handled buying, selling, warehousing, cleaning and deliveries.    “We adopted the “just do it” attitude way before Nike,” jokes Michael. “Mainly out of necessity! We were lean and mean in the early days, but we all shared a belief in the functionality and aesthetics of well-made modern design.”
Roxanne Mead, current VP Operations and General Manager Dallas, (joined the company in 1988, and is our most senior employee besides Michael), also remembers the time when “hands-on” was a literal description. “The designers did everything! We decorated and cleaned the showrooms, and even created handmade price tags.”   Compare that to our current inventory tracking and design software, as well as the services offered in our full-scale, conceptual design studio, and we can safely say we’ve come a long way, baby.

In speaking to the evolution of our business, Michael Farmer (started 1993), GM Houston adds, “One of the most interesting changes in the furniture business has been in the area of technology. We see it in the product manufacturing process and the use of newly developed materials, and we see it in the detailed, computer-aided presentations and 3-D renderings we are able to create for clients.”

"My favorite story is one about Michael's oldest daughter, Robyn. She had to be four years old at the time, and was running and playing on the floor with her cousin at the original location on Preston. Michael asked them several times to go to the back room to play, and after the third time Robyn, looked at her Dad and said 'to the bach?' or 'to the back,' mimicking Michael's South African accent. I couldn't help but laugh, as did everyone who heard it did. What a wonderful life I've had at Cantoni!" Debe Cabeza Booker (started 1988), Dallas Designer

“Luckily, MW walked past a trash can and found my employment application. He called me out of the blue and asked me to interview for a job in Houston. I came in, and accepted the position. That was 13 years ago. I still remember how impressed I was the first day I walked into the Cantoni showroom on Alpha. I had previously worked in the furniture industry for 12 years and had never seen a showroom like it.” Darren Scribner (started 1998), Distribution Center Manager

SURPRISE, SURPRISE
We find ourselves continually surprised when customers say that before venturing in, they thought the offerings at Cantoni would prove to be out of their price range. In fact, many of our own employees initially shared the misconception!  
Jennifer Harrod, our web mistress (started 2000), recalls her initial impression, ”I remember getting the call to interview at Cantoni and thinking there was no way I would fit in with all the cool, sophisticated employees and clients. But after working at Cantoni for a very short time, I had a surprising revelation that the staff was an interesting group of people—a family, really—full of talented, dedicated individuals.”  
Houston design veteran George Saba (started 1999) agrees, “Cantoni is not simply a furniture store, but a full-scale design and concept studio where anybody can achieve their dream—regardless of their budget or square footage.” 
Another common misconception is that Cantoni only offers hard modern décor—when nothing is further from the truth. Michael Farmer explains, “We have a great range of price points, and our collection is incredibly diverse. Guided by the expertise of our designers, clients find they can create both warm and transitional settings, as well as more modern and contemporary perspectives.”
CH, CH, CH, CH, CHANGES

“I remember my first Warehouse Sale in May 1994. It was at our original warehouse on Simonton. There was no Internet, no air conditioning, no GERS (Cantoni’s POS system) and no Windows or Excel spreadsheets. We worked with this massive old-school greenbar printed report from an older system to see what we had in stock. Everything was manual, from sale orders, to all the money and credit card receipts. At the table we had long lines of clients waiting on us to hand-write the sales orders. Coming together as a team and getting to interact with so many of our clients was exhausting, but also really satisfying.” Lynne Porter (started 1993), VP Finance

"So many things have changed over the years. Like our training, which is now exceptional compared to what it was like when I started. My first day it was literally, 'here's your desk, here's the phone, now answer it!' I was at a tiny desk in a big open room with no computer or voice mail system. I was answering the phone taking written messages while doing catalog updates and quotes. Meanwhile, the designers were each doing their own floor plans, by hand. Yes, we've come a long way, but we still have that plucky spirit that has kept us in business for 27 years!" Tracey Stuart Rabalais (started 1996), Houston Operations Manager.

Having a great store is certainly the goal, but creating success while maintaining a wonderful work environment is ideal. As it turns out, JAS Worldwide and Cantoni have a few things in common—both share an affinity for Italian design, and both are in the business of logistics.

JAS is a privately owned, international freight forwarding company, including distribution and warehousing, which was founded in Milan, in 1978. Simply put, they plan the careful execution of transporting goods across continents. Cantoni, too, is privately owned. Our business is about sourcing and selling superior furnishings for homes and offices, followed by guaranteeing the delivery and installation of the merchandise meets our uncompromising standards.

Last year, Cantoni had the privilege of helping JAS create the interior design of their new global corporate campus located in Atlanta, Georgia. The 90,000 sq. ft., three-building complex is a stunning work of modern architecture and technology created to enhance the work lives of employees and clients alike. Along with a state-of-the-art Training and Distance Learning Center, the campus includes a gourmet cafeteria, full-scale exercise facility compete with showers and locker rooms, conference center and video game rooms, and 10 hotel suites—each with a private bath and office, stocked with custom-made, monogrammed linens.

Like so many of our assignments, this gigantic project took shape, in part, because of a past collaboration. Our Atlanta designer, Kohl Sudnikovich, had once helped JAS Executive Assistant to President and CEO, Soraya Bollrath, with home furnishings. Pleased with the experience, Soraya then recommended Cantoni to executives looking for new desks for the JAS Atlanta branch offices. Soon after, the CEO and executive team assigned Soraya the task of sourcing and implementing the interiors for the company’s new global facility. After considering a number of much larger commercial design firms, Soraya and JAS chose Cantoni as the primary decorative resource.

"I researched and presented components from 12 furniture companies to JAS, both for the traditional work space applications, as well as for the hospitality portions of our multi-use campus. Through a rigorous process of elimination, the selection was narrowed down to just a few,” explains Soraya. “Italian heritage aside, the primary choice came down to what we all believed worked best in terms of design, functionality, and cost. Cantoni proved to be a valuable partner, and everyone involved is pleased with the result of our collaboration.”

Needless to say, Cantoni veteran, Kohl Sudnikovich, was thrilled to take on a challenge of this magnitude from a firm that is so clearly passionate about contemporary Italian design.

“This felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” says Kohl. “This amazingly innovative firm, with their background and passion for things Italian, made a perfect match for our capabilities. Our Triple C, customer-first practices were wholly appreciated by Soraya and JAS since they are committed to delivering the same kind of high-level performance to their customers.”

Surf’s Up in Redondo Beach

An American family with three young children, living in Geneva Switzerland wanted a vacation property in Los Angeles and were thrilled to find a brand new contemporary home 2 blocks from the beach in Redondo Beach. This 3,200 square foot home with four bedrooms and 4 1/2 baths was designed by Los Angeles architect Patrick John Killen, founder and Managing Principal of Studio 9 one 2.

Both the husband and the wife in this family have built careers in the fashion industry and wanted their home to reflect their international sense of style while still being a comfortable and playful environment for their children - and to honor the fact that this is - after all - a beach house.

The house is close enough to the beach to receive lots of ocean air and breezes; the property is also designed with an abundance of glass in large sweeping windows that flood this very open floor plan with natural light. The extra large patio that is revealed by sliding back several large glass panel doors expands the primary living area to include this outdoor space. The rooftop deck offers an additional private lounge area for daytime sunning or sunset cocktails with a teasing glimpse of the ocean and a panoramic view of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Each bedroom has its own private bath and there is a fireplace in one of the two living rooms and in the Master suite, to warm those South Bay evenings. All of this within a five minute stroll to the beach!

The interior designed by Studio 9 one 2 utilized an assortment of “green-friendly” materials, including cherry stained bamboo flooring. The colors of granite used in the chef-friendly kitchen accenting the stainless steel appliances are dark greens and rich browns .. all bathed in lots of natural light.

In keeping with Cantoni’s motto of ”Great Design is a Way of Life” Bernadette designed a playroom for the children where they could have their own space to just hang out, play video games and watch movies. Each bedroom reflects the personalities of the children and the Master Bedroom is a soothing and relaxing retreat for the parents.

On the main level the large open floor plan the Mercer sectional just beckons you to kick back and relax especially after spending the day at the beach. The dark oak Ritz dining table is perfect for entertaining the many friends and family who get together for bar-b-ques and gourmet dining. The artwork has a wonderful punch of color to underscore the playfulness and Southern California beach vibe.

What better way to enjoy a vacation with family and friends! This is a great home away from home with plenty of space and light and only two blocks to the ocean. That’s why Jake says “Surf’s Up!”

Five Tips for Selecting the Perfect Office Furniture

How to Choose the Perfect Office Furniture
As much as we may hate to admit it, we spend a lot of time in the office. Too many of us suffer in an office environment that is not well designed, and we make do with whatever furniture is afforded to us. But those in the know are aware that an effective, personalized workspace and intelligently engineered office furniture makes all the difference in our productivity and overall effectiveness. Whether you are setting up a professional corporate space or a small home office, there are certain considerations to keep in mind.

1. Make a List of Your Basic Needs
Before you start thinking about what furniture you will need, make a detailed list of your most basic office needs. The list should include items you must have for your office such as a computer, fax, printer, telephone, file storage, and so on. When making your list, think about the ways in which you plan to use the office. If you are a graphic artist you may need space for a computer and a larger table, or workspace for your artwork. If you are a consultant, you may need additional space for locking file cabinets to protect sensitive documents, and a place to meet with clients.

2. Choose Your Location
If you are in a corporate environment, chances are your location is predetermined, but you still need to think about how best to use this space. Consider the location of windows, the entrance and the placement of wall outlets. In most cases, the desk should be positioned with a view of the office entrance and to make the most use of available natural lighting. Home office locations are much more flexible, ranging from the corner of a family room to a dedicated office in a spare bedroom. Make sure your home office is removed from potential distractions such as the kitchen, family traffic and noise. You can also make use of the space underneath the stairways or at the end of a hallway. The important thing is that you have a permanent space that is dedicated for work.

3. Select Furniture That Works for You
There are many choices when it comes to office furniture, and in particular the most central component - the office desk. While it may appear to be just a place for you to work, quality office furniture should integrate your technology and promote efficiency. Keep your electronic components in mind. Beyond your computer and printer, think about your cell phone, video camera or music player. A good desk includes wire management to keep those unsightly cords out of view. A desk’s top needs to be durable so you need not be concerned about marring it or leaving on it an unsightly ring from your morning coffee. Look for desks that include storage to keep everyday items out of view. If your computer requires a CPU tower, consider storage solutions that will incorporate it to keep it clean, protected and ventilated. Make sure that you choose an ergonomic desk chair with appropriate support. Your back will thank you.

4. Choose Furniture that Reflects Your StyleNow you get to be creative. Choose furniture that reflects your style. Wood furniture has a more transitional feel, while steel and glass pieces are more modern and industrial. A professional office needs a consistent look, so choose a common aesthetic for your desks, storage cabinets, chairs and other prominent elements.

5. Account for Files and Supplies
Don’t forget all of the other elements that make up your office. A great desk is one thing, but if it is piled with paperwork and supplies it isn’t conducive to working. Utilize file storage drawers and cabinets to keep everything neat and organized. Mobile file cabinets provide flexibility as well as additional workspace. A locking file cabinet may be required to keep your files secure. If space is tight, consider adding shelves to your office to make use of vertical space.

In order to create an effective office, everything needs to have its place. Component systems offer the most flexibility in this regard, allowing you to combine work surfaces, file storage, supply cabinets and more to customize your office to your needs. Once you have a place for everything, STICK WITH IT! By paying attention to the details during the setup of your office, you can ensure that you have created a space where you actually want to work.

Earlier this summer, Houston designer George Saba and General Manager Michael Farmer had the chance to assist with the interior staging of a property to be featured in Houston’s first Modern Home Tour. It’s hard to believe that this sophisticated city had yet to have such a tour, but by June 11th, the stage had been beautifully set for the curious and committed to preview nine upscale contemporary homes. By all accounts, the weekend’s event was a stunning success, and we’ve got the pictures to prove it.

This home, in prestigious Piney Point Estates, was conceived and built by Capital Builders in collaboration with Nina Magon of Contour Interior Design. Nina came to us with an interest in Bontempi Cucine for the kitchen, and left as a partner in what was to become one amazing staging job.

With mere weeks to make haste, this custom spec residence (now referred to as the “Tour de Force”) had all the right ingredients to showcase what Cantoni can do for our clients and partners. The sleek exterior, use of natural stone, carrara marble, and a custom, pivoting front door practically begged for the clean and modern designs we carry. Not only does Cantoni offer a host of design services for individual homeowners, but builders, architects, and realtors often seek our product and expertise to fully enhance a near-finished project.

George, an architect himself, was thrilled to work on this 6,200 sq. ft. residence with 4 bedrooms, 4 ½ baths, three fireplaces, custom Italian kitchen (from our exclusive kitchen line—Bontempi Cucine), media room, guest suite, and too many “smart,” energy-saving systems to mention here.

We want to thank you for the wonderful new kitchen which graces our home. As you know, we have a long and happy relationship with Cantoni and especially Craig Rubright as our designer. With his advice and your expertise, the project transformed this older condo into a real gem. The model showroom for Bontempi was a great place to start and the computer rendering were exceptionally helpful.

We were doing a very extensive remodel of the kitchen. Scott (Cantoni Kitchen Design Director) described what we were doing as a transformation. we were knocking down walls, repositioning appliances, etc. the CAD drawings of the new kitchen, supplied by Cantoni, permitted me to supply the contractor a very detailed drawing, to one cm, the position of all: electrical, plumbing, and vent outlets. this greatly facilitated the contractors job, and permitted the installs of the cabinetry, appliances and counter tops to be efficiently implemented.

We thank you for all your help, patience and generosity with your valuable time. We couldn’t be happier and the project is an absolute success!

GILBERT ISLAND WATERFRONT HOME

Imagine life onboard your very own cruise ship, moored on a perpetually tranquil blue sea. That mental picture of outdoor, oceanic bliss is exactly what attracted Mr. and Mrs. Stansfield to this stunning waterfront home on exclusive Gilbert Island in Huntington Beach, California.

Drawn to the lifestyle provided by a residence on the bay, with ready access to their boat, the Southern California couple purchased the home 2+ years ago and quickly set about updating and redecorating the interior. Hoping to create a comfortable environment suited for hosting family and entertaining friends, The Stansfield’s were not initially certain Cantoni would fit the bill as a decorative resource.

“We were aware of Cantoni but thought perhaps the looks would be too contemporary for our taste. Ironically, a search for specialty leather seating for the theater led us to the showroom anyway, and that is how we met Richard.” It didn’t take our deft designer long to convince the couple that they had found the right resource to create the soft, transitional theme that would look elegant, yet warm and inviting. “The Stansfield’s knew what they were doing and it’s always exciting to work with people that get it,” says Richard. “I learned a few things from them, and they came to realize that the furnishings, fixtures and design services we offer can be used to create a truly warm and comfortable atmosphere.”

In the end, nearly every room in the 4 bedroom/4.5 bath house was furnished by Cantoni. The neutral palette, reminiscent of the color of sand, compliments the walnut floors and panels as well as the marble and granite used throughout the spectacular waterside residence. Turquoise accents, aquatic-themed art, and a three-sided “see through” saltwater aquarium pay homage to the ocean and Mrs. Stansfield’s childhood spent growing up in Hawaii. Custom window treatments and lighting (including a selectable colored recessed LED lighting system inside, and underwater illumination encircling the dock) along with custom cast glass accents further enhance the ambiance and set the stage to take advantage of the home’s unique floor plan and amazing views.

“Living comfortably on the water and having a recreational vessel floating alongside your personal dock is a liberating experience," says Mr. Stansfield. "Waterfront living has been a dream come true for my wife and me. We are so pleased with our experience in working with the entire Cantoni crew as guided by Richard. He helped us create the look we wanted for the home. Not only did Richard prove to be a fantastic collaborator in regards to space planning and design, but Cantoni’s customer service and delivery schedule was super-reliable. In fact, some of the items actually arrived early.”

TRIBECA BED IS A LIVESAVER

Admittedly, most of our eNews stories are about happy customers thrilled with the look of their newly transformed home or office thanks to the efforts of our talented design team. But when a client from Southern California sent in this heart-tugging tale to LA designer (and dog lover) Bernadette Capellaro (pictured here), we knew we had to share.

Last summer, the couple left their Beverly Hills condominium for a typical day at work, leaving beloved pets Bernie and Jackie at home with the housekeeper. In the course of doing laundry, a dryer caught fire and filled the condo with choking smoke in just minutes. Panicked, Maria fled the front door and inadvertently left the French bulldog and Jack Russell terrier inside. City and county fire personnel descended on the scene but hadn’t realized the dogs were trapped until one of the distraught homeowners arrived and notified them that there were two important family members still in need of rescue.

Despite the smoke and flames that engulfed the residence, the Captain sent 12 firefighters back inside the zero-visibility unit armed with oxygen tanks. Feeling along the walls and floor for signs of the frightened canines, the men found the pooches under the couple’s low-profile Tribeca bed (purchased from Cantoni) where they had found temporary safety and a pocket of cleaner air. After an agonizing 30 minutes, the heroes emerged and were able to resuscitate the dogs. The animals needed emergency veterinary care, but thankfully they survived.

Many of us at Cantoni share a special bond with our companion animals. Bernadette’s golden doodle, Jake (pictured on the Cocoon Bed), is a regular fixture in our LA store. We couldn’t be more pleased to know that one of our best-selling beds helped save the lives of our clients very special pets.

Two weeks ago, I was in New York City, where I have had my share of negative hotel experiences. Hint: you smell Febreeze, there’s a reason. But I finally found the most perfect hotel in New York City if you want to be in the middle of Times Square and simply walk across the street to a theater. I’m talking 46th Street just a bit east of Broadway. Location with a capital L but also, once inside, a complete peaceful oasis from the NYC jungle with a huge Texas plus to make Dallasites feel right at home: interior furnishings by our very own Cantoni.

Having worked as an educator in the field of architecture for 5 years, Lucia was thrilled at the prospect of creating a blueprint for the hilltop home she would share with her husband, Eduardo. After its completion in December 2010, the couple set out to imagine a warm interior environment that would expand on her theme of designing spaces to open from the inside out. Besides, the natural setting and sweeping city views practically begged to be showcased.

The duo spent a month touring top furniture resources, from coast to coast, before settling in Houston and connecting with Cantoni designer George Saba, himself an architect. “We thought George was the proud owner,” Lucia says with a chuckle. “The way he talked about ‘his’ furniture, the quality of the brands, and how they compared to those from other stores, it seemed as if we were in his dominion.” Needless to say, the Garza’s felt they found the perfect collaborator and right resource for their personal home project.

Armed with a laptop, the AutoCAD file, and samples of the organic and eclectic building materials (including Spanish gold sandstone, walnut, copper, steel and marble), the couple spent two weekends in Houston consulting with George. They wanted hands-on involvement, and hoped to achieve a modern look that would feel comfortable. “Every evening, we closed the store with George,” says Lucia. “It truly felt like we had our own design studio rather than merely working in a retail space.” They credit Saba, whose European roots include a long line of sculptors (his grandfather was a graduate of The Academy of Fine arts in Paris and a founder of The Academy of Fine Arts in Georgia) with helping them arrive at a more interesting scheme thanks to a few colorful suggestions. Looking at these gorgeous images, it’s easy to see how shades of chocolate, orange, and green do add a just-right vibrant touch to the neutral palette. And the dramatic results of the collaboration certainly speak for themselves. We think the three-story residence is simply breathtaking, inside and out.

“I feel lucky Lucia and Eduardo chose to work with me,” says George. “They had visited the best contemporary stores and studios in New York, L.A. and Miami, but ultimately they remembered their previous trips to Cantoni and remained impressed with our comprehensive services and custom design offerings.”

Orchestrating a design job for clients living outside the U.S. can be challenging, but Cantoni has the experience and resources to tackle international assignments with finesse. In fact, this Spanish stunner is just one of many projects our designers have successfully completed in Mexico—and in Monterrey specifically.

“All the designers at Cantoni work closely with our customer service team and distribution center,” says George, “to insure that international orders, in particular, are verified, assembled, packed and shipped correctly for delivery by the client’s transfer agent.”

Cantoni's Tribeca Bedroom Saves Dogs' Lives.

Everyone at Cantoni knows that Michael Wilkov, our Founder and Chief Energizing Officer is a true animal lover. Los Angeles Designer Bernadette Capellaro shared the following heartwarming story from her clients.

On August 2nd, our 2,500 Square-foot Beverly Hills Condominium caught fire in the early afternoon. Our housekeeper was running our two-years new Frigidaire Dryer (manufactured by Electrolux) and it caught fire in a laundry area off the kitchen. Apparently the fire and smoke inundated the entire condominium rapidly.

Maria was working in the Tribeca master bedroom in the rear area, became aware of the smoke and ran out the front door, inadvertently leaving our French Bulldog Bernie, and our Jack Russell, Jackie, behind in the smoke and flames.

I got the call and racedhome from the Agency about 10 minutes away only to find our street jammed with fire equipment not only from Beverly Hills, but also from City and County, EMT vehicles and many, many black and whites. At first I was shooed away from our front walkway until I got the Fire Captain's attention and I cried out, where are the dogs? He was taken aback and I screamed the information at him, where are Bernie and Jackie?

The Captain sent 12 Fire Fighters on O2 tanks into our zero visibility home, feeling along the walls and floor for our loved ones. I don't mind telling you I was going crazy as the minutes crept by. My mind imagining the life and death struggle evolving inside, not knowing how our loved ones would come out. The Captain tried to calm me down to no avail.

30 long, long minutes later. the babies emerged and fell into my arms, O2 tanks at the ready providing the relief they so desperately needed before quickly transporting them to the vet hospital.

You have no idea whatsoever how incredibly happy Marsha and I are to report they survived, not without treatment, but nonetheless they made it.

The headline is, Cantoni's Tribeca Bedroom Saves Dogs' Lives.

As the BHFD report goes, Jackie hid down low under the Tribeca bed. Bernie nosed his way under the covers which actually filtered the fumes to some extent, long enough to be rescued. It may sound far-fetched, but the Tribeca bed saved their lives.

Fabio Novembre uses furniture design to tell intense and fascinating stories in which the protagonist is often the human figure (or parts of it). This human figure is capable of becoming abstract and universal, able to propose a mythicized beauty as occurred in Greek art where heroes (assuredly “dark and hairy”) took on proportionate and divine features in sculptures.

In 2008, Fabio Novembre brought a mysterious reclined lady to life on the Divina lounger, and so with this new piece it is with all the more reason that Fabio seems to state the possibility of “anthropomorphic design”. In fact, in NEMO a face with classic features is hollowed out to create an inhabitable space. The result is a head-armchair to be lived from the inside.

Like a mask, it simultaneously conceals and reveals its inhabitant. Tall enough to protect the person, and designed to be used outside and inside alike, NEMO has the power to turn any habitat into a theatrical scene. And whoever uses it becomes the protagonist in a story!

Prov·i·dence: n a manifestation of divine guidance

The fact that this home is in a development called Providence now seems perfectly fitting. Chris, the owner, was merely considering the possibility of downsizing from a formal residence outside Atlanta when he happened on the small complex of luxury brownstones under construction in nearby Roswell. “I wandered into The Providence by chance and loved what I saw. The developer, his wife, and the agent were there and discussing how Cantoni was going to finish out one of the units, and so we all started talking,” Chris explains “They asked if I wanted to meet with the designer from Cantoni, and suggested I could customize the home as I saw fit, and that did it for me. I was sold.”

Cantoni was originally approached by Mike and Joy Walsh, of Lehigh Homes, to create a contemporary model home to be featured on the Roswell Woman’s Club home tour. “Since Chris bought the brownstone right after we agreed to do the design work,” Lorna Hunter (Cantoni GM, Atlanta) recalls, “we brought him in on the meetings with the architects to help finalize the layout.” From selecting tile and counter tops, to designing the kitchen and baths, to the furniture, art and even linens—Cantoni was involved with every phase of the project. “This home really represents the complete range of design and staging services we offer at Cantoni,” says Lorna. “Rooms were reconfigured to allow for changes Chris found appealing, and every tile and doorknob was thoughtfully chosen to complete the overall look.”

Chris found an easy rapport with Lorna. “I have always been drawn to contemporary décor,” he explains, “ so Lorna and I hit it off immediately.” Among the custom design ideas the two conceived for the 2,600 sq. ft. 3/3 brownstone: creating a “wing wall” (open on both sides) to form a sitting area adjacent to the guest room downstairs, removing the elevator to enhance a sense of openness while leaving the 3-story shaft as a unique focal point, and choosing to expand the height of windows on the third level to maximize the flow of natural light.
The Providence is ideally located near quaint shops, great restaurants, jogging trails and a scenic river—not to mention it’s just four miles from Chris’ office. The project represents the breadth and depth of Cantoni’s in-house creative resources, and proves again that GREAT DESIGN IS A WAY OF LIFE.

ADRIFT FLOAT SPA
En route to a different furniture store, Noah Daniel decided to venture into Cantoni. He had less than a month to find the right resource for the furnishings needed to bedeck his new relaxation spa, Adrift Float Spa. “We wanted to create a serene environment,” he explains about the design job for the rejuvenation center he started with two partners. “We wanted a clean soothing atmosphere, and our vision was perfectly (and quickly) manifested with the help of designer Janet Baker.”

Janet, a designer from our North Dallas store, seized the opportunity to help enhance the tranquility of the spa’s “quiet” room. (This waiting area is pre-float "decompression" chamber, if you will, where clients begin to unwind before entering their private salt water tank.) She chose a pair of Milano chairs, matching ottomans and a Coral area rug in ivory to go with the ocean-blue palette. Hanging above, the Droplets light fixture proved to be an instant hit. “We get so many compliments on the pendant raindrops fixture,” adds Noah. “It perfectly symbolizes the water element and everyone loves it.”

If you could use a little R & R in your life (and let’s face it, who couldn’t?), stop by the Preston Center location of Adrift and prepare to let your worries wash away.

The one-of-a-kind private floatation cabins are filled with ten inches of water and saturated with 1000 pounds of Epsom salt. The salt causes one to float effortlessly while reaching a deep state of relaxation. (One hour floating is equivalent to four hours of serious slumber!)

JANET BAKER

The daughter of a Choctaw Indian artist, Janet Baker’s passion for design began to emerge after her family moved to Colleyville when she was nine. “In those days, Colleyville was the country,” she explains. “I began collecting broken tile, plates and glass—from garage sales and from my grandmother’s storm cellar—to use so I could create wall art.” When she got her hands on some vintage formal dresses, she made drapes.

After earning a degree in marketing, Janet entered the corporate relocation business. Soon, she began helping clients with more than a new address. “I’d start giving them decorative ideas and it wasn’t long before they became my design clients,” she says with a chuckle. After three or four years, she left her job and decided to pursue a career in design full-time.

“My personal philosophy is that a space should be designed with beauty, harmony and balance in mind so that it creates an energy that nurtures and inspires its occupants,” she explains. “Hopefully my work fulfills a personal vision for my clients so they feel comfortable at home.”

Over the past 30+ years, the mother of three admits her style evolved from traditional, to transitional, to contemporary. (Having once lived in a 100-year old house, she now lives in a loft with her husband and two beloved Papillon dogs, Buddy & Buster.) “Before working at Cantoni, I’d stop by the showroom just to look at the displays and be inspired,” she says. “I fell in love with the store, and I always knew I’d have the pleasure of working here someday.”

SEEKING SERENITY

The interior redesign job at Frank and Kay Dickens' residence started with the purchase of one extraordinary piece of furniture and ultimately led to a home completely transformed. It’s a trend we see repeated with our customers time and time again.

“The client came to us with specific needs for a very high-end media room,” explains designer Elizabeth Lewis. “We worked sedulously to find the perfect sofa sectional. Ultimately we chose the Murano, in coffee brown leather with a contrasting burnt orange stitch, because it beautifully enhanced the custom macassar ebony wood media components.” In May of 2010, the space was featured in Absolute Sound magazine. Aside from appealing to media room aficionados, it turns out the couple’s Cavalier King Charles Spaniels approve of the ultra plush digs, too.

With the entertainment room successfully completed, Frank and Kay were open to seeing how other furnishings from Cantoni could help enhance the tranquil setting of their North Dallas home. The expansive living area features a 20 ft. wide window which provided a unique challenge.

“We’d had a number of designers come in, and they all want to break up the room into separate sections,” says Kay. “Elizabeth walked in and immediately had a vision. She wanted to take advantage of the natural outdoor setting and we absolutely love it.”

Elizabeth explains the challenge this way, “They’d struggled with the furniture layout in the living room because of its size. The inclination is to create two seating areas, but we agreed the focal point should remain the view of their amazing, xeriscape-inspired property. Their home, customized by Frank’s keen engineer eye, sits on three private acres and backs up to 40.” Now that’s tranquility.

This job, like many others, came with a stipulation to keep the feel warm and inviting, and not overtly modern. Cantoni continues to add collections that speak softly to the contemporary. (See eNewsletter 189 to catch a glimpse of Solitaire and Midnight, two of the newer collections we are particularly excited about.) We also encourage clients to let us make a house call, engage in discussions about how we can convey a transitional feel, and if a job is extensive—we do renderings that depict just how a finished room will look. It’s often far more cost effective to enlist the help of a Cantoni design pro. It saves time, and helps reduce the possibility of making a purchase you’ll later regret. As for the Dickens, they are thrilled with the new zen-like feel of their home. “We couldn’t be happier,” says Kay, “and we think Elizabeth is the greatest.”

MOVING FORWARD, FASHIONABLY

Recently, for a segment on her show Designing DFW, Jocelyn White sat down with our chief energizing officer, Michael Wilkov, to garner his take on future trends in modern furnishings and what’s new at Cantoni. As is often the case, the revelations he shared are not always a matter of black and white.

“We’ve evolved tremendously over the past few years and have some exciting new collections debuting in our stores right now,” says Michael. “We’re very excited about both the Midnight Collection and the Solitaire Collection. They are a study in contrasts, but equally beautiful. The response has been nothing short of phenomenal.”

An ode to the Silver Screen and 1930s Hollywood, the Midnight Collection features predominant shades of steel and mushroom brown, accented with platinum, taupe and ivory, and updated with modern fixtures and art. “It is very Hollywood, very glamorous,” notes Jocelyn, “and yet with a thoroughly modern aesthetic.” We’re pleased to say that we’ve had a tremendous reaction to the Midnight Collection, and we plan to expand on this sophisticated theme.

Next up for review, the Solitaire Collection. “Solitaire is a departure from some of our darker signature looks,” Michael explains, “but we’re experiencing fantastic success with it, as well.” The group encompasses an exquisitely rich palette in muted shades of chocolate, minx and soft beiges, with wood veneers, buttery leathers and metallic accents.

Jocelyn concludes that furniture trends seem to follow fashion, and the current looks exude a certain glitz and glam. “Fashion and furniture do align,” says Michael, “and where there used to be a lag in timing, we pride ourselves on staying ahead of the trends. There’s no doubt about it," he adds. "Right now, bling is in. We have a bed with Swarovski crystals inlaid in the headboard, and some incredible crystal fixtures in stock.”

Speaking of glass, you may have noticed the glass art best described as a “wall of bubbles.” It’s actually a light fixture, made to hang over a dining table, but uniquely used as a room divider when multiplied by four and hung side-by-side. “Just another example of the incredible creativity our in-house design team brings to service our clients,” Michael states. “Great design is a way of life, and everyone at Cantoni lives our signature creed. It’s a philosophy that comes natural to every one of us.”

DIFFA STYLE COUNCIL ANNOUNCEMENT PARTY

Cantoni played host to a fashionable crowd on January 20th at the DIFFA/Dallas 2011 Style Council Announcement & Collection kick-off party. In conjunction with Modern Luxury, the chic shindig unveiled details for the “Dramatically Different” charitable affair to be held April 16th at the Hilton Anatole.

The turnout was huge. More than 400 guests sat, sipped and partied politely at Axis, a custom home built with all the resources of the Cantoni Design Studio. (The Preston Hollow home is currently available through Briggs Freeman.)

Proficient in CAD, Sketch-Up, Podium, Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator, Lauren moved to Dallas to pursue her career in one of the nation's design capitals completing an internship at a leading Design & Architecture Firm where she worked on high end hospitality and residential projects.

Lauren has always been passionate about interior design. She defines design as the art and process of analyzing a thought, personality, or feeling and transforming it into a physical space. Using all elements of design - color, scale, harmony, balance – Lauren works hard to design beautiful and functional spaces for her clients to live their lives.

The Golden State has its share of stunning beachfront properties, but this contemporary home situated in north Laguna Beach could be ranked among the best. For Cantoni designer Richard Bustos, the Emerald Bay residence represents a stunning collaborative assignment he’s proud to put in his portfolio. “It was an honor to work on a home of this caliber,” says Richard. “It’s unrivaled in the quality of its construction, design and amenities.”

The clients, Bill and Cindy Shopoff, had arrived at our Irvine showroom one day after leaving Bill’s real estate investment office located down the street. They were looking for resources to help refurnish the 8,000 sq. ft. home, one of just 14 located on the beach, with 6 bedrooms, 8.5 baths and an unobstructed view of the Pacific.

Having previously shopped at our Dallas showroom, Bill and Cindy were fans of Cantoni but they had already retained an outside designer, Jami Martin. They were curious if this would pose a problem, but Cantoni has a long history of working with outside design professionals. In fact, Jami and Richard have great respect for one another.

“Jami and I have been doing business for years and have a wonderful working relationship,” Richard explains. “She’s super-talented and appreciates our Triple C service (Cantoni. Customer. Commitment.). She knows how serious we are about exceeding our client’s expectations.” As with our individual clients, other designers have come to value the services our in-house team can provide, including templates, elevations and 3-D renderings.

After a visit to the gorgeous residence, Richard and Jami met to discuss the fabrics, area rugs and lighting ideas she’d chosen so the two could determine the color scheme and product choices from Cantoni. We think the results speak beautifully for themselves.

From start to finish, this job took nearly two years. While not all design projects will be this big or lengthy (we’ve turned many in just days or weeks), we feel the scope of this job is telling. We’re proud to say we’ve been building and refining the business of creating custom home environments for 27 years, and we certainly plan to be here another 27. After all, Great Design Is a Way of Life.

“I grew up in Los Angeles. It’s funny to say, but I think my true appreciation for great design began in my youth when I worked for an electronics retailer,” says Richard Bustos. “I remember, I was perpetually in awe of the impressive homes I visited while on the job.” Fifteen years later, Richard remains passionately inspired by the buildings and spaces he now helps transform.

Before joining Cantoni in 2001, Richard began to immerse himself in the furniture world by working at Roche Bobois, where he opened and managed the Costa Mesa showroom. Today, we’re proud to say Richard stands on our team as an accomplished residential and commercial designer. He has successfully completed a variety of luxury projects around the globe, including high-rise condominiums, lofts, estates, vacation homes and corporate offices.

Richard has developed an impressive following, mostly from referrals. His success at Cantoni has earned him our “Gold Club” status, which recognizes excellence and multi-million dollar production over the past five years.

Do you have a hobby or favorite pastime? My favorite pastime these days is doing absolutely nothing with my wife, son and 3-month old baby girl, Francesca Bianca.

Concert of your choice. Who would you see? Jay-Z, hands down. The guy is a musical genius.

What would someone be surprised to know about you? I have a secret passion to do radio and voice-over work. I’ve had many people tell me that I “have a great voice and should do something with it.” Who knows, maybe you’ll hear me on a Cantoni campaign one day?

Favorite luxury item? Best budget buy you'd recommend to a friend? We love our mattress! It’s a combination of latex and memory foam (and can be purchased at Cantoni) and it’s absolutely the best sleep I’ve ever had. My best budget buy would be the Vinturi—it’s a wine aerator and it really works!

STAGE PRESENCE

There’s truth to the saying that one good thing leads to another. When Cantoni designer Gena Sylvester first walked into 2727 Kirby with a new prospective client, she had no idea she would emerge with a duo of staging projects for Martha Turner Properties at the same prestigious address.
“While in the Kirby building with my client,” Gena explains, “Silvia Lopez (the on-site sales manager for Martha Turner Properties) asked if Cantoni would be interested in furnishing two model units on the 18th floor.” The chance meeting and inquiry turned into a staging job that was by all accounts a resounding success. Just three weeks after placing the furniture in the condominiums, one unit was under contract and has now sold.

“The Turner people were thrilled. They wanted us to bring in coordinating contemporary looks that would give potential buyers furniture and design ideas for each distinct unit,” says Gena. “I feel like we highlighted the architectural attributes of this stunning property while showcasing the Cantoni aesthetic, proving that modern style and comfort can coexist in harmony.”

Pieces from the Cantoni Collection have always been well received by discerning clients wise to the appeal of high-rise living, so what better place than to highlight our furnishings than in the hottest new address in Houston? Distinctly modern, with sweeping views of a one-of-a-kind skyline, 2727 Kirby stands amid the city’s finest shopping and dining district—River Oaks.

Here’s how Gena’s staging project at 2727 Kirby unfolded:

Gena did a walk-thru and discussed what furnishings were used in the condominiums before, noting what did and didn’t work.
She took photos and left with a “wish list” from Silvia, along with floor plans for each unit.
Back at the in-house design studio at Cantoni Houston, Gena reviewed inventory (since special orders were out due to time constraints) and came up with a proposal and pricing.
Gena met with Silvia to review her selections and finalize the approval process.
Furnishings, art and accessories were delivered and in place within a week.
The condominium (in primary shades of black/white/red) sold, the other has an interested buyer who is considering buying it furnished, and yet another is set to be staged!

Gena Sylvester, on her passion for home fashion

Whether designing hotel ballrooms and showcase homes, assisting custom builders with floor plans and product selections, or selling accessories to retailers, Gena has spent most of her life as a hands-on student of the furniture trade.

Originally from Beaumont, Texas, Gena landed at Cantoni after recently returning to Houston from Sarasota, Florida. She quickly took note of the influence international communities were having on the city’s historically traditional tastes.

“Traditionalists are beginning to understand the appeal of mixing styles as opposed to planting an entire furniture group in a room,” she says. “Furthermore, since technology has given our clients access to the endless possibilities of design and how it will affect their budgets, the information can be overwhelming and confusing. As designer, it’s my job to sift through the data and propose a plan based on my customer’s tastes, timeline, space and budget, in very short order. Cantoni provides me with the best product and customer support available in the industry. It enables me to serve my client in a way that makes me proud to be a part of this team. ”

What is Gena’s ultimate goal? “I like to know there is a sigh of satisfaction every time my clients walk into their home. That tells me I’ve done my job.”

GETTING TO KNOW GENA

Who or what influenced you to pursue a career in design? Living in seven cities in eight years and experiencing different cultures and architecture opened the design door for me. While house-hunting, I couldn't wait to see what the owners had created inside and how I could improve each home.

If you had a free day, how would you spend it? I used to play tennis and golf, now there is no such thing as a free day for me as I’m always in the showroom. Now if I had a free week, I’d go to the beach or New Orleans!

You've been given great seats to the concert of your choice, who would you like to see live? Hollywood Bowl. Tina Turner.

Favorite luxury item in your home? Best budget buy that you'd recommend to a friend? Any of my collection of body scrubs, lotions, and bubble baths, silk-embroidered slippers given by a precious friend and my new Keurig coffee maker…in that order. Neutragena Sesame oil - do yourself a favor.

What would someone be surprised to know about you? (past, present or future) That I'm going to write a book someday about all of the characters I've had the pleasure to know.

Cantoni Buyer Allen Hart, Runs the Rock!

Cantoni Buying Team Member, Allen Hart, ran The Rock (White Rock Marathon in Dallas) last month! Allen ran it in 5 hours, six minutes, which he admits isn't a great time, but since it was his first full marathon, his goal was to simply finish. Allen said, "You go through so many emotions but the best feeling is when ...you cross the finish line and you see all the people cheering for you." Congrats to Allen, and double props for wearing his Team Cantoni T-Shirt!

20th Floor Treasure in Dallas

The view from the 20th floor of The Warrington is very fine, indeed, thanks in no small part to Annie Burroughs eye for great design. “Annie is undeniably gifted,” says veteran Cantoni designer Debe Cabeza-Booker. “She has a superb eye, exceptional taste and can visualize a polished end result with ease.”

Debe and Annie have worked together on a number of her projects, and first met about six years ago when Annie walked into Cantoni’s North Dallas store. Along with being the wife of a public servant (husband Mark is the mayor of Denton, Texas), Annie buys, redesigns and resells properties as a business. The homes and ranches she takes on typically turn quick, but Annie found it hard to let go of this Dallas jewel with the breathtaking vistas. “I told Mark we’re keeping this one,” she says with a chuckle. “I started with small units way in the back and have worked hard to get up to this front corner unit with fantastic views,” she adds with emphasis. “This place has now become our weekend retreat.”

The 2/2+ study condominium has an unusually open floor plan with spacious separate patio areas and wrap-around views on three sides. “You just don’t come across high-rise properties with this type of verandah space,” she explains.

Finished in her favored shades of beige with accents of chocolate and tangerine, this particular project was completed in just two months. For clients like Annie, who know what they want and need, Cantoni provides a well-stocked inventory of sophisticated furnishings and accessories as well as the potential for timesaving collaboration with an in-house designer.

“Even if you don’t require full design services, and you are able to put your own home together as Annie has often done,” Debe concurs, “you’ll find it very convenient to shop at Cantoni.” Cabeza-Booker would certainly know the pros and cons of working with Cantoni, she’s been honing and sharing her design skills for 22 of our 26 years in business. Now that’s loyalty and a love of great design!

Darleen Smith has been a member in good standing of the American Society of Interior Designs (ASID) for over a decade. She is an Allied member of the Gulf Coast Chapter and her license number is #1495148.

To maintain ASID status a designer must continue their education with yearly CEU credited courses to assure that ASID designers are of the highest standard and are current on the latest developments in Interior Design. This year Darleen focused her CEU courses on Green Design and Leadership in Energy Environment Design or LEED.

Darleen's flair for the dramatic Interior Design comes from studying stage, sound and lighting design at Lon Morris College where she earned a Fine Arts Degree. She continued her education at St. Mary's University where she earned her residential design certification.

Darleen has many years of experience working with builders and designing interiors for residential, custom, showcase homes, office and commercial real estate. She has extensive experience with kitchen and bath remodeling.

Darlene always focuses on the design vision of her client. Her goal is to make the finished project exceed her clients wildest expectations.

“There are lots of things in life you can’t control,” Charlotte Bickerstaff says with a chuckle, “but hair color and home décor are something fun I can change.”

Keeping it contemporary

The Bickerstaffs moved from Rancho Mirage, California, to North Texas a few years ago. As a principle with Bickerstaff, Whatley, Ryan & Burkhalter, Consulting Actuaries, David moved his practice from the firm's Southern California office to their Dallas office. The couple loved the contemporary style they lived with in the desert, and decided to go forward with the modern look when they chose Ali Manteghi to custom-build a new home in Frisco.

After a few unfulfilling stops at other furniture showrooms, the Bickerstaff's arrived at Cantoni. Marty Buchanan greeted them and asked if they’d been working with a designer. Charlotte’s candid response? “No, we’ve been trying to avoid hiring one because it’s been our experience that they don’t listen to what we want.”

We’re pleased to say that Marty won the Bickerstaff’s trust with a combination of talent and Cantoni’s Triple C, customer-first philosophy. (Cantoni. Customer. Commitment.)

“Charlotte and David knew they wanted sleek sophistication, and they were impressed with the Cantoni Collection and our ability to customize just about anything,” explains Marty. “They brought in their floor plans and chose a color palette of serene white with warm gray, black and accents of red. We proceeded with a furniture plan for all the rooms.” In the end, 90% of the furniture and art for the nearly 6,000 sq. ft. home was custom-ordered from Cantoni, including rugs and bedding.

The Bickerstaffs are a busy bunch, and after just one or two meetings with designer Marty Buchanan in person, the project proceeded with communications via house calls, phone calls and email. As for her experience working with our design pro, Charlotte says this: “Understandably, most creative individuals have egos, but I was pleasantly surprised that Marty was so open to working with a headstrong client like me. She was gracious and easy to work with, and we shared a great rapport.”

Marty believes that the key to successful projects and client relationships lies in the consideration and adherence to the overall design intent. Whether incorporating existing furniture with new selections, or starting with a clean slate, Marty’s strengths are listening to her clients needs, paying careful attention to all details, and delivering superior service.

“My clients spend so many hours, even years of their lives in their homes or offices,” she says. “If I can make their spaces better and more enjoyable, it’s a rewarding privilege.”

Home for the Holidays

Like it or not, the season of joy and juggling is here. How best to get your home ready for guests to comfortably dine and unwind? The topic was discussed when Cantoni was featured on a recent episode of Great Day Houston.

If your dining room needs rescuing, Cantoni Houston designer Gena Sylvester offered tips and advice to viewers on how to save time and money. “Before you ever leave home,” Gena suggests, “take some measurements so you arrive at the showroom prepared. Furniture that appears modestly sized in the store can look overpowering in your own available space.”

Here’s a helpful list of home-work:

Measure the room and know the ceiling height
Is there an established color scheme?
Are the floors carpeted, bare, or made of wood or cement?
Do you need lighting or a chandelier?
What about service pieces?
How many would you like to seat? (A combination of narrow chairs + arm chairs will accommodate more guests.)
Is the room dark? If so, a glass table can help create a more open, airy feeling.

Aside from helping you select complimentary pieces that will serve you well for years to come, Gena dispels the myth that enlisting the help of a design consultant is too costly to consider.

“Cantoni has so many tools available to help clients,” says Gena. “If you think of what your time is worth, hourly, and then add the time you would likely spend making trips to look at furniture, fabrics, and accessories, you would see that using our resources is the most cost effective way to proceed.”

Michael Wilkov: Our Founder & CEO

As a 26-year old immigrant from Johannesburg, South Africa, Michael Wilkov relocated to Dallas in challenging times. It was 1983, and both the city and state were in the midst of a slumping economy as bank failures and layoffs made daily headlines.

Along with documenting and distributing celebrity and lifestyle programming globally, the company owns younghollywood.com—a hot online destination for inside stories on the lives of celebrities in showbiz, music and sports. Creators knew the best way to get stars to shine was to design a hip space where they’d feel right at home, so starting in April, they transformed a three-room suite at the Four Seasons Los Angeles into a plush pad—furnished by Cantoni.

“Cantoni was the brand I wanted to work with for the studio because they offer the kind of luxurious contemporary furnishings and accessories that lend themselves to creating a memorable environment,” says Marketing & Events Coordinator, Chris Vanger.

“The Menlo Park sofa is a hit, and it figures prominently in the main room,” Chris explains. “The clean, curved nature of the piece is perfect for shooting because it allowed for depth in regards to camera angles. Plus, everyone says it’s totally comfortable.”

First impressions are important, and the Young Hollywood staff says that upon arrival, the talent feels at ease. “Cantoni’s energy for the studio not only contributes to the atmosphere we wanted to create (for the bar and seating areas), but it also helps us to capture the type of content we want as well. The ultra-cool setting helps celebrities open up more than they normally would.”

LA DOLCE VITA
The Chern’s admit they let their cats Oreo and Ethel rule their house with iron paws. So when their pesky feline friends destroyed the bedroom dresser, Jeff & Jacqueline decided it was time for a change and headed to Cantoni Dallas to look for replacement furniture. Their shopping excursion not only led to an overhaul of their bedroom and bath—but a complete remodel of the kitchen, too. (Check out the stunning “before” and “after” photos below.)
The couple had briefly considered selling their home (built in 1995), “but ultimately we knew this house fit our needs, so we decided to turn it into our dream home,” explains Jacqueline. After thoroughly researching the options, and consulting with designer Elizabeth Lewis and Scott Bonds (Cantoni’s in-house kitchen specialist), the couple decided to go Italian. “From the start, Scott and I recognized the architecture of the residence was not contemporary,” acknowledges Elizabeth, “so we knew it was essential for us to work with the integrity of the structure.”

After the four collaborators discussed potential flooring, material, and layout possibilities, Scott and Elizabeth sent the dimensions to Bontempi, in Italy. “They came back with amazing life-like renderings that proved to be dead-on,” says Scott.
In the end (or rather the beginning), the floor was replaced, a structural column removed and a wall pushed back to create the artfully clean kitchen complete with Miele and Thermador appliances. “I think the rising vent (coming from behind the gas stovetop) is so unique and functional,” says Jeff, “and not having a traditional overhead version makes the room much more open.”

“Truthfully, the money part scared me at first,” admits Jeff, “but we had worked with Cantoni before, Elizabeth and Scott knew their stuff, and nothing went wrong. And I can be pretty hard-core about certain things,” he adds with a chuckle. “I’d say if other projects go even 90% as well as ours did, clients will be glad they chose Cantoni.”
With a new kitchen in place, their son now a senior in high school, and the cat somewhat under control, the Chern’s say cooking, entertaining and eating at home has never been more enjoyable.

MAKING A SPECTACLE
When your address is high in the Hollywood Hills and overlooks the City of Angels, the stage is properly set to create a dramatic living environment. As soon as the renovations on his 3,100 sq. ft. home neared completion, Doug Fregolle contacted the woman he knew could help maximize the aesthetic appeal of the lofty residence—Bernadette Capellaro from Cantoni LA.

Doug had previously enlisted Bernadette’s help with his office and a home in Palm Springs, and has long been a fan of Cantoni. Owner of a hugely successful promotional products company (see link below), he always appreciated the fact that the seasoned designer seemed to “get” his style.

Ninety percent of the furnishings and art used in the 2 bedroom/2 bath home are from Cantoni, “because I love the way Cantoni’s clean minimalism can be balanced with warmth,” says Doug. “And the juxtaposition is not unlike living in the calm, peacefulness of the hills—just above the energy and craziness of Hollywood,” he adds.

Speaking of the property and project, Bernadette explains, “The view is majestic, and we wanted it to remain the focal point. We also decided Doug’s grand piano would make a striking accessory in the main room, and it provided the inspiration for the white/black/red theme.” The two then chose a masculine palette of chocolate and orange for the bedroom, and a den bedecked in sophisticated camel and cream hues to round out the scheme. The dazzling results certainly speak for themselves.

Having recognized an early passion for fashion and décor during a childhood spent in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Bernadette Capellaro eventually moved to New York where she graduated from the prestigious Parsons School of Interior Design.

Artistic and creative talent seems to run in the family, so when sons Daniel and Lucian established careers in Los Angeles in music and photography, respectively, Bernadette and husband John decided to join them on the West Coast. Since 2003, the couple and their golden doodle “Jake” (aka “The Designing Doodle”) have called Hermosa Beach home.

Bernadette and John (a realtor with Coldwell Banker) were childhood sweethearts. In January, they’ll celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary!

Endless windows and panoramic views of the stunning Dallas skyline are undoubtedly some of the first things you notice after entering unit #1208 on the 12th floor in the sleek high-rise known as Azure. That’s exactly what homeowners Chris and Sue Stone, and their longtime Cantoni design partner Pogir, intended.

“We worked with the developers to combine three separate units to create one spectacular condominium,” explains Pogir. “The place has a tremendous ‘wow’ factor. You can literally see through 75ft. of space. And at night, it’s easy to imagine you are in Manhattan. Having collaborated in the past, on projects that included offices and homes, The Stone’s again chose the veteran Cantoni designer to help them comfortably make the transition to high-rise living. Knowing their daughter would be college-bound in a year, the couple wanted to downsize and decrease maintenance thus affording them more time to travel. “Though she’ll be leaving home soon, we also welcomed Jacquie’s input regarding the new residence,” adds Sue.

The trio decided the color palette would revolve around the blue, brown and cream piece of art placed on the wall near the sitting area and wet bar. “To match the intensity of the views, we chose a dramatic black and brown scheme and then subtly highlighted the settings with brighter accent shades,” says Sue. Venetian plaster walls, in brown and blue, add to the rich ambiance and emphasize the truly custom feel.

“From planning the space, to selecting furniture and art, to considering various wall finishes,” Pogir explains, “I helped my clients utilize the entire array of design services we offer at Cantoni.” The result is a handsome 3,559 sq. ft. high-rise haven with three terraces and plenty of room for entertaining—a priority for this jet-setting couple who find they now thoroughly enjoy the concept of “living the high life.”

Phillippe Starck and Yoo. The House and Cantoni. Sometimes two is best, and after seeing the impressive results of this interior design job completed by Cantoni Dallas’ Elizabeth Lewis and Josh DeLaFuente, there’s no doubt each of these pairs make a perfect match.

The challenge Josh and Elizabeth enthusiastically chose to accept was this: take a one-bedroom unit in an ultrahip high-rise building in Victory Park Dallas and finish it out for maximum decorative impact. “We went with one of the smaller floor plans offered at The House to show that with thoughtful preparation and design,” Elizabeth explains, “it’s possible to make a space feel larger than it is.” Adds Josh, “The executives seemed to take notice. When they walked into the place after we completed the project, they were amazed at how spacious the luxury condo looked.”

As always, the two designers began by studying the layout. “Upscale high-rise buildings like this are more popular than ever. They often have amazing architectural angles, but those can sometimes seem to limit furniture options,” says Josh. “This is where an experienced design professional can help clients strike a balance between functionality and style.” Curved sectional sofas and chairs work particularly well in these environments, and using different textiles and materials always contributes to a polished, sophisticated feel. “Ultimately we wanted the unit to exude a soft contemporary style that would appeal to entertaining bachelors as well as empty nesters,” says Elizabeth.

Here are a few of the notable design techniques used by tag-team Josh and Elizabeth on this one-bedroom condo at The House:

• The lightest of three floor stains was selected to maintain an open, airy feel.

Just a sofa. As is often the case, that’s what the out of town customer thought they came in looking for. But shortly after meeting on the floor of the Cantoni Dallas showroom, designer Josh DeLaFuente and his new prospective client began to discuss the possibilities hidden within the walls of the property in question, and an alliance was born.

“The residence underwent a complete renovation,” Josh says. “The more we talked, the client became open to my helping with the new space plan. From furnishings, to custom art, to accessories,” he explains, “the goal was to select gorgeous yet practical pieces that matched the stunning architecture of the home and made good use of its panoramic windows.”

As inspiration, the pair began by choosing “Anodyne,” the sensational custom piece of art displayed over the fireplace in the great room. Next, an ecru Mondrian sectional sofa was selected to help highlight "Anodyn" as well as the colorful aquarium set into the rooms’ adjoining wall. The collaborators decided that though most of the furnishings would be in neutral shades, they’d use brighter hues to accentuate particular themes. Case in point: the four turquoise wine room chairs thoughfully designed by the client to tie into the pool and other aquatic elements. "The homeowner was very involved throughout the process, she literally drew the shape of the chair frames," says Josh. "It's exciting when homeowners are so passionate and involved."

It’s easy to see that the client wanted their home to reflect a love of games, too. There’s the car, the dartboard, foosball table, and most notably—an insanely cool pool table. Thanks to its unique hydraulic system, the custom gray oak and fingerprint-free stainless steel table raises and lowers to transform into both dining and card table. The four striped chairs, set around a chrome-like sectional ottoman, are but a few examples of original pieces created to enhance a client’s personal sense of style or passion.

From the acrylic sculpture (carefully placed to play off the gorgeous photorealism of "Diver," by artist Jeannie Maddox), to the outdoor ceiling fans featured in this story, Cantoni can help with design details large and small to beautifully finish a space.

“I’m so grateful to have had this amazing project to launch my career as a full-fledged designer at Cantoni,” concludes Josh. “It’s a wonderful example of our tremendous resources and the customer service standards we uphold in order to help clients conceptualize and design their ideal living environment."

What started as a single-minded shopping expedition turned into a seven month collaboration that would transform a country home into a spectacular tribute to art and design. Not a bad first assignment for a designer that had been honing his skills as a DA (Design Assistant) at Cantoni Dallas for two years. To say that Josh DeLaFuente hit the jackpot with his first project is perfectly befitting. “There’s definitely a ‘fun and games’ theme running throughout certain rooms of the home,” Josh concedes, “but the space exudes a spare elegance that’s pure sophistication.” We couldn’t agree more!

A graduate of the FIDER program (Foundation for Interior Design Education Research), the Carolina native earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Interior Design from the University of Texas San Antonio. Josh attributes his love of design to a childhood spent mostly in Charleston, where he says, “there’s no place like it in terms of heritage, culture, and great architecture.” When not meeting with clients or visiting job sites, Josh likes to spend his spare time in or near water. “I hop into my board shorts and go jet skiing or wakeboarding whenever I can. I love water sports.”

Asked what motivates him, Josh replies, “I’m fascinated with all aspects of design, from structure to material applications. I’m the designer that modifies things in ways no one thought possible.” For those who still believe that modern furnishings must go in a super-contemporary home, Josh admits he relishes the opportunity to prove this outdated perspective wrong. “I love mixing important family pieces with new furniture and accessories,” he says. “There is always a way to incorporate looks from Cantoni—we are a full-service design studio with endless ideas and resources!”
